Today I want to tell you about our latest project, the brother-in-law project. My brother-in-law contacted me and wanted me to design his brother’s old bedroom and transform it into his new living room. That project was my first full-room makeover, so I was delighted to choose decor and furnish the space.
In the first step, we took some before pictures to share the process with you. We measured the room and had a follow-up meeting with my client to observe what he was looking for. We discussed the color scheme and all his wishes. He asked for storage space, a sleeping couch if guests stayed overnight, and wanted to keep his dartboard and the life-sized Messi cardboard figure. Furthermore, he wanted the room to feel modern and a bit moody. Together we defined the colors, that we were going to use for his space: grey and white with black metal, oak wood, and some blue accents. Lastly, we’ve discussed his budget.
In the next step, I contemplated which furniture would make sense to elevate the space and how to distribute it in the room as it was small and had a weird layout. I’ve discussed my vision with my boyfriend, he brought it on paper and did an excellent job including all the details in his sketch.
I went online and searched for all the things needed and tried to stay within the budget. It wasn’t too easy to find everything, as we were limited when it came to the sizes of furniture. The couch couldn’t be longer than 1,80m etc. Eventually, I found everything, talked to our client again to ensure he liked the pieces I had picked out, and ordered everything. It took what felt like forever, for all the furniture to arrive. We started the project on January the third and waited until the end of February until everything was delivered.
We’ve removed all the old furniture and painted all the walls white (there was one orange one, yikes!) to start with a clean slate. It took us one day to build all the furniture and decorate everything.
Now, let me give you some details on the furniture and decor. I went with a gigantic cream rug to place on top of the blueish-gray carpet to create some contrast between the flooring and the couch. We went with a grey sofa bed, white cushions, and an accent cushion that had all the colors used in the space within it. I’ve decided to hang four posters (with black frames) on the wall above the couch. The posters set the blue accents for the space. We chose an oak wood coffee table with black metal legs, a black sideboard with dark grey cabinetry, and a big closet for storage.
I am pretty impressed with how everything turned out and matched so wonderfully as this was my first full-room makeover and I was a bit nervous about the final result. But I love it so much and would move in by myself instantly. The space feels so cozy, warm, and modern at the same time. By implementing different textiles and materials, I was able to create a very organic modern look.
